“Criminal” by association - how my adwords account got banned

Posted by admin  Published in Pay Per Click Marketing

Hi guys, this is one of those posts you need to read, why?  Because I just got banned by Google Adwords, for no other reason than I logged into someones account to help them out, and they were bidding on bad keywords.

So let me re-cap a sec… I spent the better part of today establishing a new adwords campaign in preparation for our major non-im product launch.  Time well spent right, setting everything up properly, proper adgroup structure, keyword structure, and ad specific ad copy and so on.

Total of about 6 hours.

At 3pm, I receive an email, now I’m not going to post the exact email yet, but here is the major part of it:

“Please note that it has come to our attention that a related (bolded for emphasis) Google AdWords account of yours (bolded for emphasis) does not comply with our terms of service and advertising policies. You have repeatedly submitted ads that violated our Gambling policies in a related account.”

I sat there and was like… uhh wtf!

I’ve never in my adwords history EVER bid on anything gambling related.

At first I was seriously pissed, and sent an email to that effect, basically asking for proof and to list campaigns/keywords etc. (waste of time - I have to say, the guy sending the emails would struggle to have an IQ past 70, and a laziness factor of 10/10 - yes I’m biased).

Then I spoke to some mates about what it “could” have been, running through some scenarios.

One dude I really respect, who spends a lot through adwords, when I told him that we had logged into a persons account to help them with their adwords setup etc. and they had recently been banned for bidding on lottery keywords, he’s like, oh dude, that will be it, they’ll be tracking you through the IP you log into.

I thought to myself, ok maybe, but surely Google wouldn’t simply ban someone because they logged into an account that isn’t theirs one time only right?  WRONG!

Since email was (and still is) a complete waste of time, I called Google, and spoke to someone there, basically running over the scenarios of what I thought it could be, where it could be wrong, when I got to the bit about me logging into the persons account to help them, he’s like, yep… that’s more than likely the problem.

So, not only does Google track by our name, address, credit card numbers etc. but they ALSO track you by your IP, and if you log into a suspect account, and log into your account from that same IP, you are GONE!

There was no warning email, no “please stop this, you have been warned”, simple “you are banned”.

The guy that I spoke to on the phone was a major help, he’s looking into the problem for me, but will I get my account back?  I honestly don’t know.

One thing I have done is taken a video recording of my account displaying all adgroups/campaigns etc. to prove that there is no gambling related keywords, and kept copies of all emails and what not.

Will it do me any good?  Probably not.

What’s the moral of the story here?

If Adwords is ever going to be a part of your business model, NEVER under ANY circumstance give your account details out, nor log into anyone elses account to help them out through the IP you log into your own account.

I should have been smarter in this, and known better, I guess I didn’t think Google would shoot first and ask questions later.

Mistakes are made to be learnt from, hopefully you will learn from mine ;)

Sincerely,

Daniel Turner

Just how important is “historical performance” on your Adwords Account

Posted by admin  Published in Pay Per Click Marketing

Thought I’d share this with you…

We have been doing PPC for a fairly long time, and have been using just a single account for our affiliate marketing, company marketing, product marketing, basically everything.

Obviously we have had separate campaigns etc. structuring all our campaigns nicely, multiple adgroups, single keywords etc. targeted ads etc. etc.

As some of you know, quality score has taken on a fairly important role on the relevancy of your ad, your minimum bid, CPC and where your ad will position.

Recently we’ve been testing some very broad keywords with targeted ads, which has basically meant we have a very low CTR with high volume.

Guess what this did?  Brought down the overall performance of the entire account.

Then I went to do some highly targeted keyword advertising in a very competitive niche…

BOOM $6.50 minimum bid…

I sat there like WTF…

So I tested the exact same campaign/adgroup/keyword/ad/url structure in a new account (everything identical)…

Minimum bid… $1.30…

Are you kidding me!

This account is like 3 or so years old, and I have now effectively STUFFED it for getting low minimum bids.

I tested this a lot of times between these two accounts, and the difference was anywhere from 65.78% to 500% cheaper…

So now I’m going to be registering a new account with the same keywords and keeping things very targeted within the same account.

I think that the quality score takes into consideration the past performance as well as the number of varied topics.

What does this mean?

If you’ve got a PPC account that you’ve sort of played around with, or you have a main account and want to test some other stuff… DON’T

Setup a new account just for testing, and keep your main account only for that which matters.

For me… lesson learnt.

Daniel
