You may remember recently we did a post on the effectiveness of article marketing when done correctly and the immense difference it can make to your sites overall success.

Now obviously I am more interested in the SEO benefits of Article Marketing, being an SEO consultant I can tell you that even today Article Marketing can and is one of the most cost effective methods of search engine optimization when done correctly.

For price you just can’t beat it. There are other equally effective or more effective methods that you can use but none can compete for price.

I’ve tried all automated article marketing solutions around and many manual solutions also, having submitted hundreds if not thousands of articles for SEO purposes. Needless to say all of the automated solutions fell short for us.

They were either non-reliable, didn’t deliver to the levels they claimed, or slow to distribute the articles.

All this was until recently when I came across UAW (Unique Article Wizard). I had been hearing all sorts of great news about the service but never had a chance to test them out until I eventually got in contact with the owners.

Hey Guys,

We all know how important it is to be indexed in the search engines, after all you spend a good deal of time thinking about what you want to actually put to paper. It stands to reason that you want the rest of the world to know about it too.

However its not always that easy to just get indexed, or even get ranking. Sure once your site is a bit older your blog posts will be indexed before you even hit the publish button (okay maybe not that quickly, but still pretty quick).

I’m going to save you a small amount of research and tell you that a brand new blog can be indexed in under 24 hours with great ease. Possible even less then that. Better still these few tips you can put in place in less than 25 minutes and they will turn your blog into an absolute googlebot magnet.

All methods are free and some involve using a third party service.

1. Install A Google Compliant Sitemap

This is really easy thanks to a plugin called Google Sitemaps Generator

Once you have downloaded this plugin, simply upload it to your wordpress blog, configure it as per the instructions and generate your first sitemap. Even though the plugin will ping Google with your sitemap every time you update your blog (automatically).

Next step is to also sign into Google Webmaster Toolbox and add your blog. Once you have added your blog you will want to verify your blog, then go to sitemaps in the right hand side toolbar and add your wordpress sitemap in.

Simple huh, you never need to worry about this step again, other then maybe updating the plugin from time to time.

2. QUIT’s Tool (Quick Site Indexing Tool)

Created by the guy over at Blue Hat SEO the tool at the bottom of this section was created to use a series of a few different techniques to get your site indexed and crawled very quickly. Guess what? It works, and very quickly too.

Submit your site as often as you like, perhaps once every second post until you are being indexed on a regular basis.

3. Automatic Social Bookmarking - OnlyWire

This is the longest step of all, the above 2 steps should take you only 10 minutes tops. You will want to sign up at Only Wire, it’s free to use.

Then you will need to create an account at all of the social bookmarking services mentioned in the tool. Only Wire then lets you easily enter your blog post details and post to those sites you signed up to, in one quick press off a button.

4. Wordpress Ping List

Log into your wordpress blog admin

Go to Options >> Writing

Scroll to the bottom where you will see “Update Services”

Paste the list below in there.

Some nice really quick things that you can implement on your site. Of course you can go into it further but I wanted to keep it simple and very time efficient.

All of this can be done in under 25 mins and will ensure your blog will get spidered more often.

Hey Guys,

Just going to touch a bit on SEO & long tail keywords.  This has been covered before, to death in many different areas but guess what I am going to do another post on it

But with some images and just a little more of an explanation on why they are important, rather then just saying do it.

I’ve been doing SEO now for over 3 years coming on 4 years now and I will put a lot of my personal success down to this very one skill so naturally I have a good leaning towards telling everyone they should learn it

When I first started out in SEO the only thing I thought that was important was getting a first page ranking for my main keyword, that was it.  Then as I matured more with my SEO knowledge and in actually practising the very first thing that change how I approach SEO now is the Cost vs ROI of SEO for keywords.

What does this mean?

Cost can come from time invested & from money invested.

Now whilst your main keyword might give you “lots of traffic” the cost to get there in most cases is not actually worth it, and normally your worst converting keyword.

Not only this but to top it off.  If you focused on long tail keywords and content you would be tripling your total traffic you could ever hope to get from just focusing on the main keywords.

Let me show you an example from my wifes site.  I love using her site as an example because she knows nothing about SEO or marketing yet is doing the basic steps (with advice from me if she will take it :P) and really kicking butt.

Okay so what is this really simple image telling you?

Well there was no need for me to show you all of the keywords but this an image from the last 30 days worth of traffic from Google Australia to Jens wedding site.

You can see she has had 8983 searches from 4876 DIFFERENT keywords.

Let me just say that she ranks on the first page for wedding as well.

About 70% of her traffic is purely from longer tail keywords that are returning maximum of 5 searches a month.

If she relied only upon her top keywords then she would only have around 2000 uniques a month.

So what is your best focus to be able to  take advantage of long tail keywords?

Well believe it or not, “most” of it does not come from difficult SEO, in fact it is the easiest to do of all.  You can gain searches merely by having all of your On-Page factors in place correctly.

For every topic you think about writing content on, the first thing you should do is find the long tail equivelant of that topic and base your article around that keyword (presuming it makes sense to write on it) and write some a quality article on the topic.  If you can add a few articles to your site every week, then you are adding a mass of keyword terms to your site just waiting for someone to search them in Google.

But it is also extremely important that you keep SEO going to the main of your site and also to some of your inner pages.  The reason for this is that it will help pass the SEO value from your main page, to your individual content pages which will in turn provide them an extra chance/boost in the search engines.

If you can continually add just a few articles to your site each week.  Then I guarantee that within 6 months you will see that you get 5 to 10x the traffic from long tail keywords, then you would if you ranked on the first page of Google for your main keyword term.

Hey Guys,

So who wants to know one of the best one way link building tools I have in my arsena, is free to use, and an absolute ripper?
Well CommentKahuna is from the guys that also created PortalFeeder. One thing that I have specifically liked about PortalFeeder are the tools that they have created for their members to use. Much like us they believe in providing all the tools needed to get the job done with efficiency.

One particular tool that they have and I just love is CommentKahuna. Now the thing is I have secretly been wishing that I could have given this away to my own members and people I speak with, but have instead had to revert to telling them about a different piece of public software since CommentKahuna was previously only available to PortalFeeder Members.

NOT ANYMORE

They have released a public version of the software, and even done some really really cool updates to it, also from speaking to Jason Katzenback (part owner of portalfeeder) they have even more planned for the software.

So what is so good about this software?

Well essentially it makes it really easy to find related blogs and posts on your topic, and then post comments on that post or blog about your experiences and in doing so gain a link back from that blog.

Now before it starts I can hear the questions already.

“Isn’t this comment spamming”

“Is this bad for the internet”

“Will my site get banned”

ABSOLUTELY NOT, If and only if you use it with integrity.

As with anything in life some things will be used for the greater good, others will be used for bad. What I suggest is the proper way to use this software and not abuse your rights or this software as a very effective tool.

It is something I would be happy to show my mum how to use properly.

In fact I did show someone who is not very technical minded, and certainly no “SEO Guru”

I showed my wife how to use it

See Jennifer (my wife) has a site on weddings here in Australia and wanted to increase her rankings for “Wedding Forum” so that she could build a forum and get her community a little more active.

There is already a base level of SEO done on the main page, but very little to no SEO done on her forum.

So I decided to show her how to use the software properly and let her do her thing. Apart from the fact that she has the luxury of being able to do anything she wants from home, it is the perfect thing for her to do whilst tuning out watching a tv show, just plod away on her laptop doing what she loves most, talking about weddings.

See when used correctly its just like partaking in a conversation, except CommentKahuna makes it 10x easier to find the blogs you are interested in, learn some information and give your feedback on the subject.

So now not only could my wife easily find sites on weddings she never knew existed, but now she can also become an authority in her field by giving back quality posts on these other sites, and build her rankings at the same time.

How cool is that!!!

So lets see her results.

1. First off she posted on about 150 different sites (yes she is crazy for weddings)
2. Secondly all posts were properly written on the subject, she really put thought and effort into giving back to the blog and community
3. Thirdly she targeted her key phrases very specifically selecting the long tail keywords she wanted to rank for, or easy to target keywords (which is where I think the power really is)
4. Fourthly she made sure all her posts meant something, not some generic random crap, but actually make sure you give back to the blog, this ensures more of your posts are accepted, and it ensures she gets traffic from the blog as well as builds her sites reputation in a good way.

As you can see from above, in this case we are tracking the triangular line not the square line (click on the image if it is a little blury for you to open up the full version).

The previous best position on December 3rd was position 28

Now on the 10th of December she is now position 15

Now for a decent keyword such as wedding forum, making a 13 position jump with some blog commenting in my opinion is a very good result.

And for only 7 days later, makes it an extremely good result. I would expect over the next few weeks for it to rise even higher with very minimal further work on her behalf.

Of course now she is addicted to quite a few extra sites and also using the software so is starting to target her deeper inner pages of her site using CommentKahuna.

The above example is just one example of this, I personally have used it to massive effect on quite a few different sites now.

What more can I say?

• Its Easy
• It Works
• It should certainly be a paid for piece of software but its not its free
• And it beats the pants of any other paid software out there currently.

This is an update to our Directory Submission Experiment

It’s been the entire 6 weeks now since we started with the submissions and we have done nothing other then good quality on-page SEO.

The results have been better then I expected. This is partially due to the fact that we are dealing with Google Australia which is easier to rank in so the results seen are better then what you would see in the main Google.

However it still does show that you can get results from Directory submissions when done correctly.

So what are the results…

Now I know that this is for Australia only, but I would still call those fairly substantial results for a brand new domain (6 weeks old now) with no SEO done to it other then the directory submission.

This kinda proves that directories do still have an effect for those that were not sure.

The results are amplified when targeting longer tail keywords with less competition.

Points to look out for:

1. Make sure your directory submission service knows what they are doing (no automatic submissions, do only manual submissions)

2. Make sure they are doing manual submissions to quality directories, too many services do this automatic submission bs which just means you are getting crappy directories basically.

3. Make sure they have a filtered list, Google has performed major smackdown recently on alot of directories, you dont want to be posted in these.

4. It is great if they can handle the confirmation receipts also.

5. Very important that they do a delayed submission over time.

For those that want to go out and find a service that would be my criteria.

No this is not another post about the PR hell that was cast upon the web recently.

Nor does Pwnage indicate some type of adult site, check out the definition of pwnage

So what is this post all about? Its about a combination of mistakes that was done recently by myself and a host that lead to the complete de-indexing of a site, total loss of rankings and a loss of around 20k a month in business.

No I will not show the site, but I will explain the very simple thing that happened.

We all know about duplicate content right?

In small batches its not so much of an issue, or if you re-write it in someway its also usually not a problem but when you have entire exact replica’s of a site, then you are asking for major trouble.

Recently the domain in question was moved over from one host to another host, now at the time I forgot that I had some add-on domains setup on the site that were using a 301 re-direct back to the main site, so as to not cause any issues.

Now when you park a domain into another cpanel account, it will normally just “map” the domain over the top of the other domain. Meaning if you visit the parked domain, you will still have the same url address as the parked domain, but it will display the content from the main domain. This essentially is complete duplication of your main site if Google were to index it.

The reason for this is that it returns a 200 ok server header. Which means as far as any Search Engine is concerned its open slather for indexing.

Okay so how is this bad then?

Well when we moved the domain the host completed the move for us and set it all up, but instead of replicating the current structure, they just re-added it as a new parked domain, thereby returning a 200 OK for multiple domains displaying the exact same content.

The Result.

Within 3 days of indexing the domain, the previously ranked domain (first place for all industry keywords) was completely de-indexed (main index was not even indexed) and as a result total loss of rankings.

 Finding The Problem

Once I thought I knew what it was, finding out was quite easy. We grabbed some unique content from the page and did a Google quotation search for that text. I actually expected to find some trouble maker duplicating my site. By doing this search you will find all indexed pages that use this unique phrase that should only be found on your site.

And you can usually find the problem that way.

What I found shocked me. It was my own site that should have never been indexed. Here I am happy with our hosts move over, when I now find my site is de-indexed, total rank loss for duplicate content because this other useless domain was indexed.

After a little more checking of cache dates etc we confirmed this was the problem and went about fixing it. Crossing our fingers that we would pop back up in the results just as quickly as we went.

The SolutionÂ

Don’t ever park a domain without doing a proper 301 re-direct on it, people say you can do a 302 re-direct, but I prefer to play it safe and use a 301.  Again you can use the server header checker above to check and make sure your site is returning the correct server header codes.

So how can you do a 301 re-direct?

I could explain it here but it would be re-inventing the wheel, so let me just point you to a resource

301 redirect Explained

For us we just used a php 301 redirect placed in the root of the main domain, effectively redirecting the entire domain to our other domain.

It took all up only 4 days after this was implemented for the said site to be completely re-indexed, and about another 2 days for rankings to come back. There is no loss whatsoever to rankings and everything is as it should be.

Lesson here is to always check parked domains when you move structure around.
