Morning guys and girls!
Overcoming procrastination is a fairly simple process. But it stems from understanding where procrastination comes from.
All procrastination is, is either not understanding what needs to be done next, not having the energy required to perform the task, or purely not wanting to do it based on some predisposed deep rooted psychological issue. Don’t worry, if you fall into the last category, I haven’t met a person yet who doesn’t have at least one of these deep seeded issues… taxes anyone?
This process doesn’t help so much with the psychological part (the cure for that is literally just to get in there and start… it’s usually not as scary as you make it out to be), but it will help with the other 2.
Step 1 - List out everything that you need to do… also called a brain dump
Literally write down everything that you feel you need to do, as well as things you want to do, or projects that you’ve left hanging somewhere with no idea how to move forward. Get it all down, don’t stop writing, don’t stop yourself, just keep asking yourself “what else needs doing?”
Step 2 - Ask yourself the question “what is the next action?”
I learned this from David Allen, who wrote the book Getting Things Done… a brilliant book and highly recommended, go through that list of stuff, and write out what the next action is, always ask this question, if ever you get stumped, ask “what is the next action?”, it gives you direct clarity, and cuts through all the BS… “this is what needs to be done, get it done by xyz date!”
Step 3 - Do the actions you’re comfortable doing if your energy is low
If you find yourself not wanting to do something because you don’t have the energy to do it, start with something simple, action precedes motivation, if you start doing and accomplishing stuff and tick your actions off, you’ll find your energy boost just by the mere fact you’re brain believes you’re accomplishing something… anything!
That’s it… anytime you feel overwhelmed or hitting a procrastination level, go through this process, I think you’ll find you’ll push through what’s holding you back.
Wealth and Abundance,
Daniel
